Internal Family Systems (IFS) Coaching
You know what you want. So why does something keep getting in the way?
Maybe you have a goal you've been circling for months - a career change, a creative project, a relationship you want to show up differently in. You have all the intelligence and drive you know you need. You know all the reasons a change would be good, and you feel ready to make it. But every time you get close, something pulls you back. A voice that says it's not the right time, a fear you can't quite name, a habit of second-guessing yourself right when it matters most.
There's a roadblock standing between you and your goal, and no amount of pushing has gotten you past it yet.
But here's the thing - roadblocks exist for a reason. Out on the street, they protect us from falling into giant holes in the ground - or they protect the people working behind them from being hit by cars. Roadblocks are very helpful things! But if the danger is gone - the hole is repaired, the workers are home safe - then the roadblock can be lifted. The problem is, sometimes people forget to tell the roadblocks that they can stop.
And that's exactly where IFS Coaching comes in.
What is IFS Coaching?
If roadblocks are inherently good things that just haven't been told they can stop, then the way to get past a roadblock is to listen to it and work with it. And that's what IFS Coaching helps you do.
IFS Coaching applies the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model to the challenges of the here and now, with an eye to personal and professional growth. Where IFS Therapy focuses on healing deeper wounds from the past, IFS Coaching is forward-focused - we start where you are, and work toward where you want to be.
Importantly, IFS Coaching goes deeper than conventional coaching. Rather than just setting goals and building accountability, we look at the inner landscape that shapes your choices, your confidence, and your sense of what's possible. Often the most powerful shift isn't learning a new strategy - it's understanding why a part of you has been resisting change, and helping it finally feel safe enough to let you move forward.
IFS Coaching helps you build a two-way street of internal understanding. You can understand with your mind all the things you need to know - your patterns, your history, your strengths and weaknesses. (In fact, if you're reading this right now, you probably already do.) The thing is, only understanding those things with your mind is a one-way street - it's you looking at (or even looking down at) the parts holding you back.
But the parts that hold you back are doing it because they believe they're actually helping you by doing that. They're using tools that were probably, at some earlier time in your life, incredibly helpful. Once you can truly listen to those parts, and validate all the ways they've been trying to help, the parts that hold you back can finally start to understand you.

How is IFS Coaching different from IFS Therapy?
In my work, both coaching and therapy use the IFS model, which means that the line between them can be fluid. The main difference is one of focus and depth.
Therapy tends to spend more time deeper in the past - working with parts that carry old wounds, trauma, or pain that needs healing before you can move forward. Coaching tends to stay closer to the present - working with the parts that are creating blocks, resistance, or conflict around your current goals and circumstances.
I find that coaching sessions often naturally touch on deeper material, and therapy sessions often address present challenges. What matters most is where you want to start - and we can always adjust as we go.
If you're not sure whether coaching or therapy is right for you, a free intro call is a great place to explore that together.
